Gookie Story
Mind expanding cookies

If you go travelling to find yourself, all you end up with normally is a dodgy tie-dye t-shirt and an even dodgier piercing. Instead we found John Altman.

We were hanging out on Baker Beach in San Fran when we met him giving away free cookies. We were entranced. It might have been the weather, it might have been the vibes, it might have been the intense combination of sour cherry and rich chocolate flakes, but they were the best damn cookies we'd ever tasted. When we told John this, he said only one thing: 'Spread the love.' 'Like, make people happy, man. Take the recipe, bake the cookies, spread the love.'

So when we came back to the NL, that's exactly what we did. We bake cookies with all natural flavouring, give some of the profits to good causes and try to make people's lives a little sweeter every day.

The Cookies

What goes in 'em?

Nothing but 100% all natural flavouring. And lots of love, obviously.

Like John, we're pretty firm believers in karma, so all the recipes for our cookies are based on combining.the sweet with the sour, the dark with the light:

Sour Cherry & Chocolate

Butterscotch & Grapefruit

Almond & Green Apple

Small ways to make life better

Cookies make people happy - we like giving them as much as eating them.

To make people's lives a little bit better, we're going to launch a polite campaign to bring some sunshine to everyone's daily routine. It might be helping you bag your groceries at the supermarket, it might be giving your free gookies to go with your coffee, it might be giving food to homeless people.

It could be all of these and more. Just keep your eyes peeled for our volunteers. And if you want to join in, all you have to do is do your Gookie deed for the day and give someone a hand or a gookie. It's that easy.

100% good, not perfect

We love the planet as much as anyone. Sadly, although we try our best, we're not as good for it as we'd like to be. Here's a list of what we're currently doing to minimise our impact on the environment and what we'd still like to improve.
We're welcome to suggestions for any way to improve our operations, please send them in to
spreadthelove@gookie.nl. And if it works, you'll receive a lot of love, gookies, and a big thank you on the packaging.

In the Gookies:
We use 100% natural flavourings, and natural ingredients wherever possible. If we've got no alternative, and until we find something better, then we'll have to use some artificial things like E numbers. And we should also point out for anyone with allergies that Gookies contain gluten, milk and traces of peanuts.
Below we've put together a list of everything you'll currently find in Gookies:

The Natural Stuff
Wheat flour
Sugar (we think sugar is much better for you than artificial sweeteners, plus it tastes better too)
Water, Starch, Vegetable oils and fats, Salt, Vitamins A, D3.
Natural Flavourings - Butterscotch, Grapefruit, Sour Cherry, Chocolate Flakes, Black Pepper, Rose Flavour.

And here's a list of all the E Numbers we currently use:

Raising agent
E500 - it's scientifically regarded as harmless
E341 - it's natural but it's best if you don't eat tonnes of it

Glazing agent
E904 - it's a natural additive
E414 - it's not bad for you, it's not good for you. So it's ok.

Acidulant
E330 - it's scientifically regarded as harmless
E331 - it's scientifically regarded as harmless

Raising agent
E500 - it's scientifically regarded as harmless
E341 - iy'd natural but it's best if you don't eat too much of it

Glazing agent
E904 - it's a natural additive
E414 not bad not good

Emulsifier E471, not good.
We're currently looking for a replacement for this additive. It's part of the margarine we use. Some scientists say it's perfectly innocent but we're trying to get rid of it anyway.
Emulsifier E322 - it's scientifically regarded as harmless

In our packaging
We use BioWare from Huktamaki (link) - designed to have a lower impact on the environment, it's fully industrially compostable.
One part that isn't compostable is the plastic we currently use to seal the pack - but that's something that we're working on to cut this out.
We also include seeds in every pack of Gookies. Although this isn't designed to really offset anyone's carbon footprint, we just thought it was a nice idea.
The ink we use is still standard, though there are no chemicals in it. We're working with our supplier to use a completely environmental friendly ink.
The wrapper for the tubs comes from an FSC source
The plastic bags Gookies are sealed in is still not biodegradable because we could not find ones that preserved the biscuits well enough. We're still searching. Do you have an idea?
In our production process:
We work with the Wezo groep to give people with physical, mental or learning difficulties who find it difficult in the 'normal' workplace a chance to work in our bakery.

CO2 In our Transport and Production
We made a rough estimate for our Carbon Footprint and we offset this every quarter by buying and safeguarding forest via www.CoolEarth.org. Every acre we protect locks in 260 tonnes of C02
This also includes all transportation related CO2. From our suppliers, our own trucks and we even made an estimate of your drive to the supermarket to compensate the CO2. So we're fully covered! Or at least we've done our best.
